|Australia The First Five Years|
Author: Haydn Davis
In May 1787 two small British warships slipped their moorings in Portsmouth Harbour and sailed into the English Channel at the start of one of the epic voyages of British maritime history.
Following them were nine other ships, all civilian merchantmen, carrying marines, convicts and supplies.
This lavishly illustrated book paints a detailed picture of the journey undertaken by the 1,500 souls who were to spend the next 8 months crossing 16,000 miles of tempestuous mostly unchartered ocean.
On arrival this band of settlers, consisting chiefly of thugs, murderers, rapists, pimps and prostitutes, found themselves marooned on a pinprick of a vast unexplored land. Their next task was to establish a small colony without possessing any of the necessary skills needed for such an enterprise whilst struggling to withstand starvation, disease and native attack.
A fascinating book which paints an all to vivid picture for all those interested in the early history of this far off continent.
