Glimpses of Gwent Books from Gareth D John paints a fascinating picture of not only times gone by, but also reflects on the present day.  Using his own books and those of fellow Gwent-based authors, readers will surely be both enthralled and entertained.  And rightly so!

As a native of Ynysddu in the Lower Sirhowy Valley, Gareth D John is fiercely proud of his Welsh roots which are reflected in his racy and sometimes caustic
style of writing.

Born into a thriving colliery community during the early 1950s, he attended the local schools before gaining a Chemistry degree at the University College of Wales, Cardiff.

Ah! Happy days as he then gained scholarships from Arthur Guiness & Co (Dublin) to research into the black nectar which lead to a Doctorate in Brewing Chemistry and the envy of the many regular quaffers amongst us all!

After a career as a School Chemistry Master and Senior Examiner for the Welsh Joint Education Committee, he now resides in Cwmbrân (The Valley of the Crow) and is the son of the long-established poet Glynfâb John.

Dr John is the author of a string of highly successful books which started long ago with 'A Good Head for Beer' which was first published in 1982.

Following his first book, as he brought up his two daughters over the next few years, his prolific output was channelled into a series of regular articles in a wide range of reputable literary publications both locally, throughout the UK and as far afield as America and Kenya.

With his daughters grown up, his late Kenyan-born second wife and confidant Mary Waithira John gave him renewed inspiration to put pen to paper again and develop a series of eminently readable and enjoyable books.

A gifted violinist/fiddler and a past 1st violinist in the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, music still plays an important part in his life.

Gareth regularly performs throughout the Principality and on a wider stage for groups including Clocs Canton and the world-renowned Isca Morrismen amongst others.

Notwithstanding, Dr John's love of writing about the beloved county of his birth remains unabated.  "I trust my book selection brings great pleasure to all - Iechyd Da!!!"
